A couple of weeks ago, you remember, when it wasn’t freezing, some of my friends went over to South of Beale to test out the new lunch menu on their patio. There is nothing like sitting in the early fall sun, when temperatures are more Southern California Cool than the usual summer sizzle we have around here.
So, I reached out to the fellow eaters on Twitter, and I got a bunch of different recommendations for what to order, which is a good sign. I chose the steak sandwich, and the only downside was my inability to charge it to the Underhill’s account (if you missed that joke, stop what you’re doing immediately and go watch Fletch).
While this is one of my all-time worst photo compositions, I think it gets the point across that the steak sandwich is loaded and the German potato salad is burly. The steak comes with sauteed peppers, garlic mustard, and smoked gouda. It was definitely well cooked, flavorful, and good. And the potato salad was great as well!
Around the table, we had a couple of orders of the great lunch staple, fish and chips, and I got a good report on those. I can speak on the chips from experience, and I like them, and I’ll trust in the fact that all the fish was eaten off a couple different plates to explain that it must have been good.
Highlights of the menu is that it is a fried perch and they make the tartar sauce in house. Making sauces and dressings in a restaurant is a little, but important touch, so I’m psyched to see that!
Lastly, one of my other friends got the shrimp salad, which was definitely not the mayonaisey shrimp salad that Memphians would often think of.
Romaine, strawberries, shrimp, and hula bread. Pretty simple, but it looked pretty tasty.

What I’m most excited about is the way that South of Beale has had a slow steady growth. They always had good food, then they added a nice patio, now they are serving lunch, and it is cool to see a place grow into what it is. I’ve always been a big fan of theirs, as good food, good service, and cool aesthetics will always keep me coming back! See you there!
