The (Southern) Belle of the Ball

A week or so ago, I got together with my friend Kerry, of the award-winning, Memphis-hyping blog, I Love Memphis. I’m always excited to hang out with her, because in addition to nerdy blog talk, we both like to eat and discuss it. Since her work takes her all over the place, she’s always got a good recommendation or two to pass on.

Well for this lunch, I was interested in Southern Belle, which I had recently read about in the Memphis Flyer and shortly after on I Love Memphis. We met up at this caterer/restaurant on Madison just West of Cleveland (South side of the street). They have about 5 or 6 tables in the front of house, so there is probably room for 20-25 diners at lunchtime. It was about halfway full when I made it over there.

If you’ve ever gone to a Mexican restaurant with me, then you’d know that I get mildly stressed out by menus that have a ton of options. Maybe it is some form of ADD, but I can’t pay attention to the menu when it has so much on it, and I always end up just blurting something out at the last second with the server frowning at me after everyone else has ordered (“Oh, you’re all out of that one, just give me chicken tacos…).

Southern Belle has one meat dish per weekday and about 6 veggie sides. That’s it. It was so liberating. I was like, “I’d like, well, whatever it is you have today!” I’m really into eating what someone else wants to prepare, so if it is the only thing they make, I’m guessing they were excited about making it, and thus, it will be good. You can see that my ordering habits are full of faulty logic and wild assumptions, but they work out most of the time.

Anyway, the entree for the day was the crawfish etoufee., so I gladly ordered that with a side of my favorite vegetable, greens.

This place is so cool. They serve it all up in to-go containers, so you’re in shape if you are eating there or heading out the door. The etoufee was excellent and full of crawfish and flavor. Definitely a keeper.

There’s a little close up of the action. Here’s a shot of the greens.

Wonderful, leafy deliciousness. Loved them.

Basically, the deal is, I am going back to Southern Belle soon. I want to find out what’s on the menu for another day of the week and trust that it will be great. Give it a shot. See you there!

PS. Drive it up – I just saw this movie the other day, and it was insane awesome. If you like 80’s-inspired music, driving, and a lot of action, this would be right up your alley. if you aren’t in to a little bit (ok, a decent amount) of violence, then you should probably skip it. But the soundtrack is so good, I don’t even know what to do…
