I’m a Soul (Fish) Man!

I’m a Soul Man

What’s one of the best things about living in the south? One of my favorite is how we use adjectives that don’t wouldn’t normally go with food to describe types of food. In this corner, soul food.

I may not have super awesome dance moves, and I may look more like an old (read, slightly larger) Dan Akroyd than that young buck in the above video, but I do have a little bit in common. I too am a soul man. A soul FOOD man. What does a soul food man do when he’s one part starving, one part in a mild hurry, and two parts craving food from a restaurant that is always crowded? Order that sucker to-go. Here’s the thrilling story of one man’s trip to Soul Fish, a story in which he defeated the odds and got the fish tacos that are so good that you might just want to name your boat after them.

Teach Him How to Soul Fish

I headed right around the corner and up Cooper to hit up Midtown’s Soul Fish. Soul Fish is known for their awesome southern, comforty, soul food, including their damn good catfish. I’ve fallen into the Michael Jordan Factor trap at Soul Fish. In case you need a refresher course, the MJ-Factor is when you order the same thing every time you go to a certain place, named after MJ, because he could always be counted on to be the best and perform. My MJ are the blackened catfish tacos (as Stacey points out, they are actually closer to burritos, but whatever).

As you can see, I got those tacos for the road. Best part of the to-go order? The fact that my food was in my hands in less time than it would have taken for me to get a seat in the restaurant. So, a quick drive home, and I’m sitting on the couch with an awesome dinner.

Fish tacos come with one side, and I have a hard time saying no to their great sweet potato fries, so I brought those along for the ride as well. But, I had to make mine a meat + 2, so I ordered one of the best dishes of the summer. Say hello to the cucumber salad.

Crisp and cool. This is what summer is all about. This, and drinks with limes in them.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Soul Fish is a great spot for awesome food, whether you want to eat in or carry out. I know I’ll be back. Because when a dish gets 23 (Jordan) status, you’re always going to go back.

Get yourself over there, and see if the tacos live up to your Jordan Standard. See you there!
